Victorian scent bottles often feature ornate sterling silver mounts, rich coloured glass such as cranberry or salmon pink, and intricate cut or moulded glass patterns designed for dressing table display.

They were typically crafted from blown or moulded glass combined with sterling silver collars, hinged lids, and ground glass stoppers, frequently bearing British silver hallmarks.

Authenticity is determined by examining the crispness of the glass cutting, the presence of legible maker marks and silver hallmarks indicating the assay office and date, and hand-ground stoppers that fit snugly.

They can be displayed grouped on a mirrored tray on a dressing table, within a glass-fronted cabinet, or placed on a bathroom shelf to add a touch of period colour and texture.

Clean the glass gently with warm soapy water and a soft cloth, avoiding harsh abrasives. Polish the silver mount sparingly using a specialist silver cloth to preserve the historic hallmarks and prevent metal loss.
