Georgian Plain Stem Firing Glass, Flanged Foot

18th century
Description

This is a Georgian, flange-footed firing glass dating from the second half of the 18th century, c1770.

The glass is in excellent condition for its age. It shows age related wear and tear to the rim of the foot and the rim of the bowl consistent with some 250 years of use.

The glass has a trumpet-shaped bowl measuring 5.4 cm (2.1 inches) in diameter at the rim. The bowl is plain and sits on a short extruded plain stem and a thick, flanged firing foot which measures 7 cm (2.8 inches) in diameter and displays a rough pontil mark to the base. The glass is 9.2 cm (3.7 inches) in height. There are no chips, cracks, significant scratches or any obvious evidence of restoration. There is a collector's sticker to the underside of the foot. There is an oblong-shaped unburst bubble in the metal of the foot dating from manufacture.

It is made from English lead metal weighing in at 170 g. (~ 6 oz.).
