Description

A superb pair of Japanese Satsuma lamps from the Meiji period in excellent condition dating from around 1890. The lamps have exquisite detail to the hexagonal bodies that are painted with figures in landscapes.

The hand painted detail is quite exceptional with figures in kimono and traditional dress before a beautiful lake scene in rural landscape set into framed panels. The surrounding millefiore background is beautifully gilded and profusely detailed everywhere with typical Japanese motifs and large chrysanthemum blooms.

Both are signed to the base by the artist.

The lamps are recently rewired with modern braided cable in keeping with the period and come with a pair of new pleated silk shades that suit the style nicely.

These measure 65 cms in height overall with the shades being 35 cms in diameter.

Satsuma ware is a type of Japanese earthenware originating from Satsuma Province in the southern part of Kyushu. While production began in the late 16th century, the heavily gilded and polychrome pieces most commonly collected today date from the Meiji period (18681912) when they were extensively exported to Western markets.

Satsuma pieces are traditionally crafted from a characteristic buff-coloured, earthenware clay covered with a finely crackled transparent glaze. Decoration is typically applied by hand using enamels and raised gold gilding, often depicting traditional figures, landscapes, and floral motifs.

Authentic antique Satsuma ware features a fine, evenly distributed network of glaze crazing known as kannyu, beneath which the cream-coloured clay body is visible. Genuine pieces frequently bear artist signatures, studio marks, or the Shimazu family mon (cross in a circle) on the base, painted in iron-red or gold.
