Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

During the Victorian era, particularly in the mid-to-late 19th century, cabinetmakers favoured figured walnut veneers, floral marquetry inlays, and decorative gilt bronze mounts heavily influenced by classical French furniture design.

These cabinets were constructed using solid timber frames faced with figured walnut veneers, inlaid with contrasting timbers for decorative scrollwork, and fitted with glass door panels, velvet-lined shelves, and cast brass or gilt bronze mounts.

Authentic pieces typically feature hand-cut dovetail joinery, original brass locks, cast gilt metalwork showing natural surface oxidisation, and slight natural movement or fine crazing to the walnut veneer.

Place the cabinet as a focal feature against a plain or textured wall, utilizing the glass-fronted shelves to display curated glassware, ceramics, or bound volumes to create contrast with contemporary furnishings.

Keep the cabinet away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent veneer cracking or colour fading. Dust regularly with a clean, dry microfibre cloth and avoid using chemical polishes on gilt metalwork.
