Victorian Salviati and Co. Lion Head Decanter

19th century
Description

This is a late Victorian Lion's Head decanter, mouth-blown by Salviati & Co. some time in the late 19th century, c1880. Almost identical examples can be seen in Andy McConnells' wonderful book "The Decanter - Ancient to Modern" on page 293.

The decanter is in excellent condition for its age. This means, of course, that it shows some age related wear and tear to the rim of the base consistent with use.

The decanter has been blown in clear glass, decorated with cranberry coloured rigaree. The decanter sports two Lion's Head aventurine medallions on its broader sides. The decanter measures 15 cm (6 inches) across at its widest point and the short, conical foot carries a rough pontil mark. The decanter is 28 cm (11.2 inches) in height without the stopper, and 33 cm (13.2 inches) tall with the stopper inserted. The stopper is of radially fluted form and is almost certainly the original. It contain cranberry inclusions that match the decanter. There are no chips, cracks, significant scratches or any evidence of restoration. It rocks a little on its foot.

High quality soda glass weighing in at 720 g. (~ 1 lb. 9 oz.).
