This nineteenth-century English country house stool offers a practical seating option for a kitchen island or a rustic breakfast bar. The piece is constructed from richly coloured dark brown hardwoods, showing a polished wooden finish that accentuates the natural grain. The design incorporates a dished circular seat set atop four heavily turned spindle legs, which feature intricate bulbous turnings and a tapered profile towards the feet. Stability is provided by a network of central cross stretchers connecting the legs near the base, adding structural reinforcement and visual detail. Signs of age include gentle surface wear and minor scuffs on the wood, consistent with nineteenth-century daily use. Measuring 56 cm high, 28 cm wide, and 28 cm deep, the compact frame fits easily beneath counters or tucked into small corners when not in use. This stool provides authentic character and sturdy functionality for traditional or farmhouse-inspired interiors.

Country house stools are utilitarian wooden seating items produced in rural workshops during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, characterised by turned legs and simple dished or flat wooden seats.

These pieces were commonly constructed from native hardwoods such as oak, beech, or elm, featuring mortise and tenon joinery and turned spindle legs reinforced with cross stretchers.

Authentic examples exhibit uneven wear patterns around the lower stretchers and seat edges, natural wood shrinkage around the joinery, and individual hand-turned spindle variations.

A tall wooden stool can be placed beside a kitchen island or counter, positioned in an entry hallway as a plant stand, or used as an occasional side seat.

Dust regularly using a dry microfibre cloth and apply a clear beeswax polish once or twice per year to preserve the original finish and protect the timber.
