Old Sheffield Plate is an early form of silver plating created by fusing a sheet of silver to a copper base, predominantly produced from the mid-18th century until the introduction of electroplating in the 1840s.

These pieces were crafted using a core of copper fused with a thin layer of sterling silver, often featuring hand-beaten bodies, applied silver borders, and cast handles soldered onto the structure.

Authentic pieces often exhibit bleeding where the underlying copper shows through the edges or wear points, and they typically lack the maker marks associated with solid sterling silver, displaying instead device punches or no marks at all.

They can be utilised on a sideboard or dining table as functional barware for entertaining or repurposed as decorative vessels for floral arrangements in a traditional or transitional room.

Care should be taken using non-abrasive silver polishes and soft cloths to avoid wearing through the thin silver layer down to the underlying copper base.
