Elegant Antique English Silver Plated Revolving Breakfast Dish by Mappin and Webb

1900 - 1920
For Sale by Puckerings
Description

One of the most special Breakfast dishes I have come across in some time, we only ever purchase them when they are particularly special, this one by top London silversmiths, Mappin & Webb.

The dish stands on four highly decorative fluted legs. The dome is simple with an elegant fluted design. The revolving lid is kept closed with the help of a key on a chain.

When the knob at the front is pushed back the dome revolves to reveal the two original shallow trays. These are perfect on a buffet to serve either hot (with hot water beneath) or cold (with crushed ice below) dishes; a very impressive addition to any occasion.

A quality late Victorian / early Edwardian example in superb condition dating to c.1900. 11" handle to handle x 7 1/4" (plus knob) x 8" tall to top of dome.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Popularised in the late Victorian era, a revolving breakfast dish is a silver-plated hot food server equipped with a domed lid that rolls back underneath the body to conserve space at the dining table.

These dishes were typically constructed from electroplated nickel silver (EPNS) or sterling silver, often featuring bone or synthetic insulating knobs, removable interior liner trays, and cast metal feet.

Authentic pieces feature makers marks, electroplate symbols such as EPNS or EPBM, numeric registration numbers, and signs of period craftsmanship including hand-chased details and heavy cast feet.

Place the dish as a central accent on a dark wood sideboard or buffet table, pairing it with linen runners or glass decanters to complement the metallic finish.

Apply specialised silver polish using soft cotton cloths, avoid abrasive scrubbing pads, and ensure interior hot water reservoirs are dried thoroughly after use to prevent oxidisation.
