Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This Victorian antique silver plated folding shell biscuit box, dating from 1880, serves as a refined piece of silver serveware. The object consists of a scalloped shell body with engraved scrollwork and a mechanical frame, finished in a bright silver colour. Notable details include scrolled feet, a circular ring handle at the top, and ornate metal mounts. Measuring 23 cm high, 20 cm wide, and 12 cm deep, the box functions practically as a biscuit container on a sideboard top. Today, it finds a home on a dining room sideboard or living room cabinet, where it holds biscuits or small sweets during gatherings.

FAQs

A Victorian folding shell biscuit box is a specialised mechanical serving item developed during the late nineteenth century. Featuring dual hinged compartments shaped like clam or scallop shells, the box opens via an integrated frame mechanism to serve biscuits during afternoon tea.

These serving pieces were primarily crafted from electroplated nickel silver (EPNS) or sterling silver. They often feature cast nickel-brass frames, engraved surface detailing, and internal pierced leaf dividers designed to keep baked goods separated.

Authentic period examples feature maker marks, patent registration stamps near the mechanical joints, and cast frame construction. Smooth functional action in the folding mechanism and natural age-related wear on high points of plating also signal authenticity.

A silver biscuit box serves as a functional centrepiece on a dining table or an accent piece displayed open on a sideboard, drinks cabinet, or console table within a modern home.

Maintain silver plate by dusting with a dry cotton cloth and polishing gently with specialised silver foam when tarnish appears. Mechanical hinges should be kept free from moisture and cleared of residue without submersing the entire mechanism in water.
