This antique Balouch rug from 1920 displays a tribal style with a hand-knotted wool construction. The rectangular floor covering exhibits a deep red and tan colour scheme, showing a light tan central panel populated by stepped diamonds and geometric medallions. The central field is enclosed by a broad deep red border decorated with latch-hook motifs, while fringing lines the top and bottom edges. The palette includes dark blue and rust red tones within the complex patterning. The piece measures 188 cm high, 96 cm wide, and 1 cm deep, offering a practical rectangular format for a study or library floor. It suits placement as a warm accent piece on wooden floorboards or under a coffee table to introduce traditional textile craft to an interior space.

FAQs

Baluch rugs originate from nomadic and semi-nomadic tribes inhabiting the border regions between Iran, Afghanistan, and Pakistan. Historically, weavers created durable, portable carpets for daily functional use within tribal encampments, incorporating geometric iconography passed down through generations.

These carpets are traditionally hand-knotted using soft wool pile tied onto a wool warp and weft foundation. Saturated natural dyes extracted from madder root, indigo, and plant materials historically produced the deep shades of crimson, navy, and brown characteristic of the weave.

Authentic examples feature dark colour palettes, soft lustrous wool, geometric latch-hook or medallion motifs, and flat-woven kilim ends. Because they were woven on portable horizontal looms, minor variations in width and pattern symmetry are common hallmarks of authenticity.

A Baluch carpet introduces rich colour tone and architectural structure when placed over light oak floorboards, polished concrete, or neutral carpeting. The geometric pattern complements dark timber furniture, leather upholstery, and eclectic decorative schemes.

Vacuuming should be done gently using suction only, avoiding rotating brush bars that can pull the pile fibres. Spills must be blotted immediately with a dry cloth, and professional hand-washing by a specialist rug restorer is recommended for deep cleaning.
