Victorian butter dishes, popular during the late 19th century, were designed to keep butter cool and clean on formal dining tables using ice chambers or ventilated domes, often featuring whimsical animal finials.

These pieces typically combined electroplated nickel silver (EPNS) mounts, domed lids, and undertrays with pressed or frosted glass liners designed to hold dairy products safely.

Authenticity is determined by hallmarks or makers marks stamped on the silver plate, heavy gauge glass liners, natural tarnish patterns, and traditional manufacturing marks such as old casting seams.

Such decorative tableware can be displayed open on a dining sideboard, utilised as a jewellery holder on a dressing table, or integrated into a tablescape as a focal point.

Clean gently with a non-abrasive silver polish and a soft cloth to avoid wearing away the thin silver plate, and store in a dry environment to prevent excessive oxidisation.
