Rare Regency Mahogany Circular Tambour Linen Press Cabinet

19th century
Description

DESCRIPTION

This is a very unusual Regency period mahogany linen press cabinet, dating to circa 1815, distinguished by its bold architectural form and highly unusual circular tambour-fronted cupboard. The upper section features a striking geometric pediment with carved scrolled finials to each end, above a remarkable circular tambour door with fine vertical fluting, enclosing a shelved interior. Below, the chest is fitted with two short drawers over two long drawers, raised on turned bun feet. Pieces of this architectural form, with such an unusual circular tambour detail, are exceedingly rare. Probably custom made by an accomplished cabinetmaker for a wealthy household.

DIMENSIONS

181cm high x 105cm wide x 51cm deep

CONDITION

There is minor wear, knocks and scratches commensurate with age and use, and some sun fading to the front and right hand side. There are some minor knocks, splits and losses to the veneer, and minor damage to the top of the pediment on the left and right near the roundels, and on the back of the right hand side. The pressed brass handles are replacements. The joints are solid and the drawers run smoothly. The tambour also runs smoothly and appears to retain the original fabric backing. Separates into three parts (cornice, upper section, lower section). Overall a very attractive and unusual piece in good condition for age.
