Old Sheffield plate is an early form of silver plating created by fusing a sheet of sterling silver to a copper core, predominantly produced from the mid-18th century until the mid-19th century before electroplating was invented.

These items are constructed from a fused laminate of copper and sterling silver, often featuring hand-soldered joints, cast silver mounts or borders, and wooden handles insulated with ivory or horn spacers.

Authenticity is identified by characteristic copper bleeding where the thin silver layer has worn through at high points, edges showing a sandwich-like line of copper, and makers marks that often consist of initials rather than official assay office hallmarks.

This piece can be displayed as a focal point on a sideboard or mantelpiece, contrasting its reflective metallic surface with contemporary minimalist ceramics or organic natural textures.

Preservation requires gentle cleaning with non-abrasive silver polishes to avoid wearing through the delicate silver layer to the underlying copper, and maintaining stable humidity levels to prevent tarnish.
