This Regency period Old Sheffield Plated sauce tureen dates to c1820. The rectangular piece is fashioned from copper and finished in silver with exposed warm copper tones visible along the raised edges and sides. Intricate gadrooned borders frame both the vessel body and the fitted lid, complemented by delicate heart motifs within the edge detailing. A decorative shell-shaped handle sits atop the lid, matching the style of the cast feet that support the base. Measuring 15 cm high, 23 cm wide, and 14 cm deep, the compact tureen suits placement on a dining room sideboard top or a table for serving sauces during formal meals today. The interior remains clean and functional for modern dining settings.

Old Sheffield Plate refers to a historical manufacturing process invented in the 1740s where a layer of sterling silver was fused onto copper ingots before being rolled into sheets and worked into tableware.

Regency era sauce tureens were typically crafted from fused silver on copper or solid silver, featuring hand-worked bodies, cast handles, decorative feet, and applied gadrooned borders.

Authentic Old Sheffield Plate often exhibits copper bleeding through the silver layer on high-wear points, visible seams, applied silver wire edges to cover raw copper, and unplated or rubbed undersides.

An antique silver tureen functions effectively as a decorative centrepiece on a dining table, a styled vessel on a sideboard, or a accent piece within a glass display cabinet.

Old Sheffield Plate should be washed gently in warm water with mild soap and dried with a soft microfibre cloth, avoiding harsh abrasive polishes that strip the thin silver layer.
