Antique Blue Enamel Fleur De Lys Brooch 18k Gold Triple Cartouche Design 19th C.

19th century
For Sale by Artisan Antiques
Description

We are delighted to offer this magnificent antique 18ct gold brooch made during the 19th century.

Spectacular on all fronts, this brooch exudes a regal and majestic air with its rich antique gold tone and royal blue enamelling.

The brooch features a three panel shield/cartouche design with two fleur de lys motifs flanking the central escutcheon. The decorations are incredibly detailed and fine with each border featuring scrolled and foliate motifs with additional gold swags connecting the three sections.

Historically, fleur de lys motifs have represented royalty (notably in France), and is associated with purity, light, and life. Furthermore, in Christianity, it is often related to Virgin Mary & The Holy Trinity, symbolizing faith, wisdom, and chivalry.

In addition to symbolism, such a design also offers the perfect opportunity to display a high level goldsmithing/enamelling with each little component culminating in a magnificent detailed brooch.

This brooch is most certainly distinguishing, whether be it within a collection, display or for wearing in special occasions.

The brooch is unmarked as is common with articles of this period and as such we have tested it for gold indicating 18ct gold.

Not only would this piece make for an excellent collectable/display but also serves as a wonderful piece of antique Victorian celestial jewellery to wear on special occasions, whether be it a party, ball or dinner. Certainly impressionable and distinguished, this piece would be a wonderful conversation starter and the perfect way to share your passion of history and antiques.

All of our jewellery comes with a complimentary hard shell gift box with a velvet interior.

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Blue enamel jewellery gained immense popularity during the mid-to-late 19th century, frequently incorporating gold accents, heraldic imagery, and intricate scrollwork inspired by French Rococo revival aesthetics.

Craftsmen typically utilised high-karat gold, such as 15ct or 18ct yellow gold, paired with vitreous enamel formed by fusing powdered glass to metal at high temperatures.

Authentic pieces display hand-engraved details, pin mechanisms consistent with period manufacture (such as C-clasps or extended tubed hinges), and uniform vitreous enamel application without modern resin fills.

An antique brooch can be affixed to a tailored jacket lapel, used to secure a silk scarf, or mounted onto a dark velvet ribbon as a choker necklace.

Clean gently with a soft dry cloth, avoiding ultrasonic cleaners, steam, and harsh chemicals that could crack the vitreous enamel or degrade underlying solder joints.
