This Edwardian novelty biscuit box takes the form of a musician's drum, dating from around 1900. Modelled in oak with a warm brown timber grain and silver-plated mounts, the cylindrical body displays a detailed rope pattern running across triangular tension brackets, complete with smooth silver-plated top and bottom rims. The matching silver-plated lid holds a finial formed from crossed drumsticks resting on an open sheet of music, and an arched swing handle with a small belt buckle detail attaches to the upper collar. Inside, the piece retains its original white ceramic liner. Measuring 15 cm in height and 13 cm in diameter, this compact container serves well on a sideboard top in a gentleman's library, study or dining room for serving biscuits or sweets.

FAQs

Popular during the late Victorian and Edwardian eras, novelty biscuit boxes were decorative table containers designed in figurative shapes, such as drums or barrels, crafted to store baked goods while entertaining guests.

These barrels typically feature a wooden body, such as oak or mahogany, fitted with silver-plated rims, handles, lids, and interior liners designed to preserve freshness and resist moisture.

Authentic examples usually show makers marks or electroplate silver hallmarks, such as EPNS, stamped onto the metal rim, lid, or handle, alongside natural age-related wear on the wood grain.

A drum-shaped biscuit box serves as a distinguished accent on a dining room sideboard, coffee table, or home bar top, functioning either as decorative storage or as a conversation piece.

Clean the wooden staves with a dry soft cloth, applying wax polish sparingly, while gently wiping silver-plated elements with a non-abrasive silver cloth to prevent excessive plating wear.
