Georgian silver strainers gained popularity during the 18th century alongside the rise of tea-drinking culture in Britain. Edinburgh silver from this period is particularly noted for its distinct provincial assay office marks.

These items were traditionally crafted from sterling silver, often featuring hand-pierced bowls and chased or engraved handles. Many surviving pieces also include a layer of parcel gilt wash inside the bowl.

Authenticity is verified by examining hallmarks stamped onto the metal, which typically include a makers mark, a standard mark for sterling silver, a duty mark, and an assay office symbol indicating the city of origin, such as Edinburghs thistle or castle.

Such pieces can be displayed on a sideboard top, integrated into a bar cart arrangement, or housed within a glazed display cabinet to add historic metallic texture to a room.

Antique silver should be cleaned sparingly using a soft microfiber cloth and specialised non-abrasive silver polish to preserve the original patina and hallmark engravings.
