FAQs

Zanzibar chests are traditional storage trunks crafted along the Swahili coast, heavily influenced by Omani, Indian, and Portuguese trade connections during the 19th century.

Authentic pieces are typically constructed from dense East African teak or rosewood, reinforced with intricate brass straps, studs, and heavy-duty locking mechanisms.

Key indicators of age include hand-beaten brasswork, traditional dovetail joinery, iron or brass side carrying handles, and signs of genuine patina and wear on the timber.

These versatile pieces serve as a striking focal point, functioning effectively as a coffee table in a living room or as a statement storage solution at the foot of a bed.

Maintain the wood with high-quality microcrystalline wax, avoid placing the item near direct heat sources, and clean the brass gently without harsh chemical abrasives to preserve the natural oxidisation.
