Milking stools were utilitarian items crafted by rural woodworkers or farmers using locally sourced timbers like elm and ash, designed specifically for stability on uneven agricultural floors.

They typically feature a solid hardwood top, often elm for its resistance to splitting, combined with cleft or turned legs of ash or other hardwoods inserted via wedged tenon joints.

Authenticity is indicated by genuine utilitarian wear, hand-tool marks, oxidised patination, and traditional construction methods such as through-wedged tenons rather than modern fixings.

Such pieces serve well as functional side tables, plant stands, or sculptural accent elements that add warmth and historic character to minimalist or contemporary schemes.

Maintain the wood by avoiding direct heat sources and sunlight, dusting regularly with a dry cloth, and occasionally nourishing the surface with traditional beeswax.
