A tantalus is a locked drinks cabinet designed during the Victorian era to securely display decanters of spirits while preventing servants or guests from helping themselves without authorisation. The mechanism locks the stoppers in place until a key is turned.

Authentic period pieces were predominantly constructed from solid oak, mahogany, or burr walnut, featuring sturdy dovetail joinery, mirrored back panels, green velvet or felt linings, and heavy brass or plated mounts, locks, and corner brackets.

Authenticity is determined by inspecting the timber patination, hand-cut crystal decanters with matching numbered stoppers, working brass lever locks stamped by period makers like Betjemann, and traditional joinery methods rather than modern fixings.

This piece works well as a focal point on a sideboard, home bar, or study desk, bringing a layer of historical interest and sophisticated craftsmanship to both traditional and contemporary spaces.

Maintain the timber using a microcrystalline wax to nourish the grain without leaving a heavy build-up, and wash the crystal decanters by hand in warm soapy water using a bottle brush, avoiding harsh chemical cleaners.
