This early 20th century French hall lantern originates from the 1900 period in a Gothic Revival style. The piece takes a square form constructed from dark grey wrought iron with applied acanthus leaf cresting, decorative scrollwork, twisted iron bars, and a hinged door on one side, inset with leaded panels of textured clear, blue, and red glass. It measures 86 cm high, 31 cm wide, and 31 cm deep. In a modern interior, this ceiling light hangs in an entrance hall, landing, or stairwell to provide ambient overhead illumination. The dark metal framework and coloured glass panes integrate into period or eclectically styled spaces, suspended by iron straps attached to a top hanging loop.

Originating in 19th and early 20th-century France, wrought iron hall lanterns were designed to illuminate entryways, corridors, and foyers with ambient light filtered through decorative glass panels.

Artisans forged iron frames using hand-hammering, scrolling, and riveting techniques, setting mouth-blown or textured leaded glass panels into metal channels.

Authentic period pieces feature hand-hammered ironwork with visible joinery such as rivets or collar ties, along with leaded glass showing hand-cut irregularities and period-appropriate patination.

Positioned above a foyer entryway, staircase landing, or dining space, a wrought iron lantern introduces architectural texture and historical contrast to neutral contemporary schemes.

Dust the iron frame regularly with a dry cloth, apply a thin coat of clear microcrystalline wax to prevent oxidisation, and wipe the glass panels carefully with a dampened lint-free cloth.
