Brass-mounted wooden shelving became prominent during the Regency period and saw a major revival in mid-century French interior design, championed by prestigious houses like Maison Jansen, combining classical architectural motifs with functional display.

These pieces typically feature solid or veneered tropical hardwoods such as mahogany paired with cast brass uprights, tension rods, and decorative X-framing, often assembled with precision mechanical joints.

Authentic pieces exhibit heavy cast brass components rather than plated steel, genuine hardwood construction with appropriate grain patterns, high-quality hand-finishing, and period-appropriate joinery or maker signatures.

Balance the rich warmth of the dark wood and polished metal by styling the shelves with a curated mix of vertical books, sculptural objects, and negative space to maintain an open, airy aesthetic.

Maintain the finish by dusting regularly with a soft, dry cloth and occasionally applying quality beeswax to the wood, while using non-abrasive cleaners specifically formulated for brass to prevent oxidisation without damaging surrounding timber.
