FAQs

Silver-plated goblets gained popularity during the 19th and early 20th centuries as an accessible alternative to solid sterling silver, allowing middle-class households to display polished metalware on dining tables and sideboards.

These items are typically constructed from a base metal such as brass, copper, or nickel-silver, which is then coated with a thin layer of pure silver through electroplating and often decorated with chased or engraved motifs.

Authentic pieces often feature makers marks, manufacturer stamps, or hallmarks indicating electroplate quality (such as EPNS) on the underside of the base, alongside natural signs of oxidisation and wear consistent with age.

They can be displayed grouped together on a sideboard or bar cart to reflect light, or repurposed as small floral vases to introduce metallic texture and contrast into contemporary tablescapes.

Preserve the finish by cleaning with a specialist silver polish and a soft cloth only when necessary, avoiding abrasive materials, and storing them in a dry environment to minimise tarnishing.
