Antique Georgian Solid Silver Gilt Lidded Box/snuff Box Pair - Archibald Douglas 1827

18th century
Description

We are delighted to offer this fine Georgian silver-gilt lidded box/snuff box pair with marks for Archibald Douglas in London, 1827.

Upon first glance, the ornate and striking silver-gilt (gold on top of solid silver) design presents a regal ambience in spite of their relatively modest size. It is, however, upon holding in hand that its true quality and impressive degree of silversmithing can be fully appreciated.

Whilst challenging to convey through photos, its guage/weight is very impressive with thick walls and a hefty lid, almost to the extent that the pair feel like two silver bullion bars.

The juxtaposition of its classical minimalist Georgian design contrasted by a very ornate gilt appearance is a wonderful touch. Furthermore, its quality can be sensed upon its opening/closing as the lid has a soft yet perfect fit/closure.

The tops are both hand engraved with a lovely period crest of a tortoise.

As a pair, these boxes are wonderfully collectible as well as versatile, whether it be for use as a snuff/pill/spice box or perhaps with some creative contemporary ideas, it may be used to store small articles such as jewellery.

A full set of matching hallmarks are present, both on the interior lid and the side of the base of the box.

An exceptional quality pair of Georgian silver-gilt boxes, presenting the finest traits of classical English Georgian style.
