This Edwardian silver-plated tea tray, dating from 1900, is designed in an English Country House style. The oval piece is crafted from silver plate and electroplated nickel silver, presenting a polished silver colour throughout. The surface displays extensive chasing with intricate foliage and scrollwork surrounding a central plain cartouche, complemented by a raised pierced gallery border featuring swags and a gadrooned rim. The item measures 4.5 cm high, 38.5 cm wide, and 25 cm deep. In a contemporary home, this small tray functions well placed upon a sideboard top as a decorative accessory, or used for serving drinks in a living room or dining area. The construction shows distinct period craftsmanship through the detailed piercing of the gallery and the depth of the engraved motifs across the base plate. It adds a traditional touch to both period and modern interiors when displayed on a surface or used during gatherings.

An Edwardian silver-plated gallery tray is characterised by a raised, decorative rim or gallery surrounding a flat platter surface. Produced during the reign of King Edward VII (19011910), these trays frequently combine electroplated metal bases with delicate surface chasing, scrollwork, and geometric or pierced gallery walls.

These trays were commonly constructed from Electroplated Nickel Silver (EPNS) or electroplated copper. The base structure was shaped, decorated using hand-chasing or machine engraving, pierced with decorative cut-outs, and subsequently layered with a thin coating of fine silver.

Authentic pieces typically feature stamped manufacturer hallmarks or letter markings such as EPNS on the underside. Look for evidence of period manufacturing techniques, such as hand-pierced gallery scrollwork and light wear where the base metal may show through silver plating on high points.

A gallery tray functions well as a decorative base on a sideboard, coffee table, or ottoman to group decanters and glassware. It can also be placed on a dressing table or vanity top to organize bottles, accessories, and small collectibles.

Clean silver plate using a soft, non-abrasive cloth and a specialised silver cream or polish, avoiding harsh scrubbing that can remove the thin silver layer. Wash with warm water and mild dish soap if necessary, ensuring the item is thoroughly dried immediately to prevent tarnishing and water spots.
