Victorian sentimental jewellery, including lockets and hair work pieces, gained immense popularity during the 19th century, particularly influenced by Queen Victorias prolonged period of mourning following the death of Prince Albert, allowing wearers to keep tokens of loved ones close.

These pieces were typically crafted from yellow gold, gold-filled metals, rolled gold, or pinchbeck, often featuring transparent rock crystal or glass covers to protect delicate internal elements such as woven hair, miniatures, or dried botanicals.

Authentic pieces often exhibit period-appropriate construction methods such as hand-soldered bails, bezel settings without modern laser welding, slight signs of age-related oxidisation, and characteristic clasp mechanisms typical of the 19th century.

While wearable items are primarily styled on the body, antique lockets and small sentimental objects can be displayed within glass-topped table vitrines, shadow boxes, or specialised small display trays as part of a curated vignette.

Protect antique glass and delicate internal contents by keeping them away from moisture, ultrasonic jewellery cleaners, and harsh chemical dips; instead, clean metal gently with a soft microfibre cloth and store them in padded, climate-controlled boxes.
