Georgian, Engraved "Newcastle" Light Baluster Wine Glass

Description

This is a Georgian, engraved "Newcastle" light baluster wine glass dating from the mid-18th century, c1750.

The glass is in excellent condition for its age. It shows age related wear and tear to the rim of the foot consistent with some 270 years of use. It has a rough pontil mark on the underside of the foot.

The glass has a bell-shaped bowl measuring 8 cm (3.2 inches) in diameter at the rim. The bowl is wheel-engraved with a formal border under the rim and sits on a light baluster stem consisting of a teared knop above a triple annular knop above a short piece of plain stem above a thin inverted baluster with a basal knop. The stem leads to a conical foot which also measures 8 cm (3.2 inches) in diameter. The glass is 17.5 cm (7 inches) in height. There are no chips, cracks, scratches or any obvious signs of restoration.

Lead glass weighing in at 180 g. (~ 6 oz.).
