Description

A rare pair of Georgian silver bottle tickets. These wonderful pieces are rectangular in shape, with a reeded border and squared corners. The words 'Chili Vinegar' are engraved to the centre of one and 'Worcester' to the other. The labels are supported on belcher chains and the titles are in 'pricked' initials.

Large Georgian cruets contained many small bottles of sauces and condiments and these unusual examples are particularly interesting. The spelling of Chili with one 'L' is rather rare and denotes the Georgian time period. Unusual collector's pieces, decorative and practical. Dimensions below.

FAQs

Silver bottle tickets, also known as decanter labels, emerged in the mid-18th century during the Georgian era to identify various wines and spirits held in cut-glass decanters.

These items were predominantly crafted from sterling silver using techniques such as die-stamping, piercing, and hand-engraving, often suspended by matching trace or link chains.

Authenticity is typically verified by examining hallmarks for the makers mark, standard silver mark, assay office mark, and date letter, alongside assessing the natural patina and wear.

They can be displayed mounted in shadow boxes, used functionally on bar carts with modern decanters, or styled on sideboards as part of a curated display of metalware.

Silver should be cleaned infrequently using a specialist non-abrasive polish to preserve the hallmarks and antique patina, and stored in a low-humidity environment.
