Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An Old Sheffield Plated tea caddy is a storage container crafted using a process invented in the 18th century where a layer of sterling silver was fused to copper before shaping. Used to store loose tea leaves, these containers were central to British tea-drinking rituals during the Georgian and Regency periods.

Regency caddies were typically made by hammering or rolling fused silver and copper sheets into cylindrical, oval, or rectangular forms. They featured fitted lids to create an airtight seal, often adorned with gadrooned or rope-twist borders, and sometimes lined with tin or lead foil to preserve the aroma of the tea.

Authentic Old Sheffield Plate often exhibits a soft colour warmth distinct from electroplate, alongside visible copper bleed where the silver coating has thinned at raised edges or seams. Additionally, authentic pieces from the era often lack standard sterling hallmarks, featuring either blank surfaces or makers symbols pressed into the metal.

An antique silver tea caddy functions well on a dining room sideboard, kitchen shelving, or a gentlemans library desk. Its metallic texture provides contrast against dark wood, marble surfaces, or modern matte ceramics.

Clean Old Sheffield Plate gently using a soft cloth and non-abrasive silver polish to avoid removing the thin layer of silver. Avoid harsh chemicals, immersion in water, or aggressive rubbing on areas where copper exposure is already visible.
