Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

FAQs

Fruit knives and forks became popular in the 18th century as dining habits evolved and specialist cutlery was introduced for dessert courses, particularly to prevent acidic fruits from tarnishing steel blades.

Handles were commonly crafted from mother-of-pearl, bone, ivory, or silver, while the blades and tines were typically made from sterling silver or silver gilt.

Authenticity is verified by examining hallmarks for the makers mark, standard mark, town mark, and date letter, as well as assessing the hand-engraved detailing and wear patterns.

These pieces can be displayed in glass-fronted cabinets, shadow boxes, or styled on a dining table within a traditional or eclectic table setting.

Clean gently with a specialist silver cloth or mild, non-abrasive silver dip, avoiding harsh scrubbing to preserve delicate engravings and hallmarks, and store in tarnish-resistant cloth.
