This George I period kneehole desk dates to around 1715 and reflects the refined style of the early eighteenth century. Fabricated from warm brown walnut with brass hardware, the piece presents a rectangular top above a long upper drawer, flanked by six smaller side drawers arranged three to each pedestal. A recessed central cupboard sits between the pedestals, secured by a small brass keyhole escutcheon. All drawers and the long top drawer are fitted with ornate brass swing drop handles attached to shaped backplates, complemented by decorative brass escutcheons around keyholes. The lower section stands upon shaped bracket feet that elevate the entire structure slightly off the floor. Visible details include distinct quarter-veneered grain patterns across the timber surfaces and natural ageing marks on the brass mounts. Measuring 81 cm wide, this compact antique furnishing fits neatly into a study, home office, or library setting as a functional writing workspace with extensive compartmentalised storage for stationery, correspondence, and desk accessories.

Originating in the early eighteenth century, a George I kneehole desk is a compact form of writing cabinet or dressing table featuring a central recessed cupboard flanked by pedestals of small drawers.

These desks were commonly constructed using figured walnut veneers over pine or oak frames, complemented by solid brass drop handles and engraved escutcheons.

Authentic pieces exhibit early eighteenth-century construction traits such as hand-cut dovetail joints, bracket feet, feather or crossbanded drawer borders, and original brass mounting marks.

A kneehole desk serves as a functional hall console, vanity table, or compact home office workstation when paired with understated modern seating and lighting.

Position the desk away from direct heat and sunlight, dusting regularly with a soft dry cloth and applying natural beeswax occasionally to preserve the timber patina.
