Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This double serpentine partners library desk dates from the 1880 Rococo Revival period and is constructed from burr walnut with a warm brown timber colour, complemented by original red leather inset on the top surface. The piece has ornate cast metal drop handles, cedar-lined drawers, and carved cabriole legs ending in distinct pad feet, alongside delicate floral carving at the kneehole arch and a hanging green fabric tassel. The desk measures 74 cm high, 122 cm wide, and 66 cm deep, with a 61 cm knee height. Suitable for a gentleman's library or a home study, the desk provides a functional workspace while functioning as a centrepiece in the room. It positions comfortably in the middle of a study or against a wall, offering multiple drawers for storage and a durable leather writing surface for daily administrative tasks.

These desks are defined by their curved, wave-like front profile and the use of burr walnut veneer, which features intricate, swirling grain patterns. Popular during the Victorian era, they frequently incorporated Rococo Revival elements such as cabriole legs, carved details, and integrated drawer storage.

Writing desks of this period feature solid hardwood frames veneered with highly figured burr walnut. Writing surfaces are traditionally inlaid with gold-tooled leather, accompanied by cast brass or bronze drawer handles.

Authentic period desks show hand-cut dovetail joints on the drawer lining, natural wear along the kneehole and edges, and age-related patination on the brass hardware. The leather inset should also show characteristic signs of age and historic tooling.

Position the desk centrally in a dedicated home office or library space to highlight its curved silhouette. Complement the warm wood tones with neutral wall palettes, contemporary leather seating, and simple desk lighting.

Dust wood surfaces regularly with a soft microfibre cloth and apply a clear beeswax polish periodically to protect the veneer. Clean the leather inset with a damp cloth and apply leather conditioner to prevent drying and cracking.
