This nineteenth-century writing table belongs to the Louis XV Revival style and dates from around 1880. Constructed from burr walnut with a warm brown tone, the piece incorporates an inset top surface of red leather featuring gilt tooling. Ornate brass or ormolu mounts adorn the curved cabriole legs and the drawer fronts. The shaped frieze includes working drawers fitted with cast metal swing handles, and decorative gilt metal moulding edges the rectangular top. Signs of age appear in the fine surface cracks visible across the red leather writing surface. Measuring 132 cm wide by 69 cm deep and 71 cm high, the table provides a substantial work surface for a home study or library. Suitable for placement in a traditional study, home office, or bedroom, the table serves as a functional workspace or decorative writing desk. The traditional French chateau aesthetic integrates well with period interiors and classic interior schemes. The freestanding design allows placement against a wall or centrally within a room to display the detailed walnut grain and decorative metalwork from all angles. The compact dimensions accommodate modern living spaces while maintaining historical character.

A bureau plat is a French-style flat writing table featuring a flat surface, often inset with leather, supported by four legs with drawers incorporated into the frieze.

Nineteenth-century writing tables were frequently crafted using fine hardwoods such as burr walnut, mahogany, or rosewood, adorned with gilded bronze ormolu mounts and gilt-tooled leather writing surfaces.

Look for hand-cut dovetail joints on drawers, natural age-related oxidisation on metal fittings, original hand-tooled leather surfaces showing subtle wear, and veneer applied over solid hardwood carcases.

Position the writing desk near natural light sources, paired with a modern chair or leather armchair, and accessorise with contemporary desk lighting or metallic accents.

Dust the timber regularly with a soft cloth and apply beeswax polish periodically, while treating the inset leather with a specialised leather conditioner to prevent drying.
