Burr walnut refers to wood taken from a walnut tree growth where the grain has swirled and patterned knots. It gained immense popularity during the late 17th century in the William and Mary period, and saw a major revival during the Victorian and Edwardian eras for high-end cabinetry.

Authentic pieces typically utilise fine walnut veneers applied over a secondary timber substrate such as pine or oak, secured with traditional animal glues. Joinery methods often incorporate dovetail joints on drawers and hand-cut mortise and tenon frames.

Authenticity is identified through hand-cut dovetails, minor inconsistencies in the timber grain, traditional patination, and the use of old cut screws or hand-beveled glass panes. Veneer thickness and natural fading over time also help verify age.

A burr walnut bookcase serves as a striking focal point in a study or living room. Pairing it with minimalist modern furniture or neutral wall colours highlights the rich, organic grain patterns without overwhelming the space.

Maintain antique walnut by keeping it out of direct sunlight and away from heat sources to prevent veneer cracking. Dust regularly with a soft, dry cloth and occasionally apply traditional beeswax to nourish the timber.
