Georgian James Giles Gilded Facet Cut Stem Wine Glass

Status: This item has been sold
Sold by: The World is Made of Glass Ltd.

This is a scarce Georgian, facet cut stem wine glass gilded in the atelier of James Giles and dating from the middle of the 18th century, c1770.

The glass is in excellent condition for its age. It shows age related wear and tear to the rim of the foot commensurate with some 250 years of use. It has a rough pontil mark on the underside of the foot.

The glass has an ogee-shaped bowl measuring 5.5 cm (2.2 inches) in diameter at the gilded rim. The bowl is beautifully gilded with a trailing, fruiting vine and sits on a diamond-cut facet cut stem. The stem ends in a conical foot which measures 7.2 cm (2.9 inches) in diameter. The glass is 14.7 cm (5.9 inches) in height. There are a couple of minute unburst bubbles in the metal of the foot dating from manufacture. There are no chips, cracks, significant scratches or any obvious evidence of restoration. The gilding is very slightly rubbed in places.

Lead glass weighing in at 165 g. (~ 6 oz.).
