Novelty condiment containers modelled after agricultural items, such as Guernsey milk cans, became popular in British silver manufacturing during the late Victorian and Edwardian periods, combining functional tableware with humorous or whimsical design.

These pieces were typically crafted from solid sterling silver using traditional silversmithing techniques, featuring hinged lids, applied handles, and often retaining remnants of original internal gilding to protect the silver from corrosive condiments like mustard.

Authentic pieces bear official British hallmark stamps indicating the assay office, silver standard (such as the lion passant for .925 sterling), and a date letter corresponding to the year of manufacture, alongside the makers mark.

Small antique silver pieces can be displayed on a sideboard or incorporated into a formal table setting as functional condiment holders or decorative cabinet curiosities to add historical interest.

Antique silver should be cleaned infrequently using a specialist non-abrasive silver polish and a soft microfibre cloth, avoiding harsh chemical dips that can strip the natural patina accumulated over the decades.
