Art Deco design emerged in the 1920s and 1930s, characterised by geometric symmetry, stylised motifs, and vibrant colours achieved through materials like enamel and coloured glass.

These pieces commonly combine a moulded cut-glass or crystal base with a sterling silver lid, frequently embellished with translucent guilloche enamel over engine-turned metal.

Authentication relies on examining the hallmarks stamped on the silver rim or lid, which indicate the assay office, makers mark, and date letter, alongside checking the enamel for signs of period-correct wear and craftsmanship.

This type of decorative object can be displayed on an open shelf, dressing table, or mantelpiece to add a pop of colour and historical texture to modern schemes.

Silver components should be gently polished with a non-abrasive cloth, taking care to avoid contact with the fragile enamel surface, which should only be wiped clean with a soft, damp cloth.
