This beautifully painted blackamoor figure is shown standing in the prow of a gondola holding a light in one hand and an oar in the other. This rare figure is in good antique condition with no major issues just the usual small marks and signs of use

Venetian figural floor lamps originated in 17th and 18th-century Italy, taking inspiration from the elaborate theatrical traditions and maritime culture of Venice, particularly gondoliers and page figures. These sculpted lighting fixtures became popular Grand Tour souvenirs during the 19th century and were produced as decorative floor-standing torcheres.

These lamps are carved from lightweight woods such as pine or lime wood, coated in gesso to smooth the timber, and finished with polychrome paint and water gilding using gold leaf. The electrical components are later additions, as early examples held candles or oil lamps.

Authentic pieces display hand-carved tool marks, natural wood shrinkage cracks, and wear to the polychrome painted surface exposing the white gesso ground underneath. Genuine period examples often show subtle signs of historical rewiring along the carved channel.

A figural standard lamp functions as a sculptural accent piece. It is typically positioned in entry halls, library corners, or beside formal seating where its height and detailed carving can be appreciated alongside neutral or classic furnishings.
