19th century
For Sale by Aramis Antiques
Description

A superb late Victorian cut lead crystal glass engraved scent perfume bottle c1880.

The multi faceted bottle has 6 protrusions mid body with 3 of them overlaid on the underside in amber colour and all 6 engraved underneath with a typically Victorian posy of flowers. The protrusions circumnavigate the body and are cut so that they undulate around in sweeping scrolls. The base is a sturdy star cut hexagon. The upper body is slice cut upwards through a lower collar, neck and upper collar. The stopper is superbly cut to repeat the 6 protrusions below but in clear glass. In excellent condition, no chips or cracks. This is a wonderful example of its kind. The coloured glass is amber, not yellow or lemon yellow.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Victorian cut crystal scent bottle is a glass container designed to hold liquid perfume, crafted during the late nineteenth century using heavy lead crystal decorated with geometric wheel cuts and glass-engraving techniques.

These bottles were hand-blown from lead glass to achieve weight and clarity, then shaped using lapidary cutting wheels. Coloured accents were created by staining or flashing layers of coloured glass onto the clear crystal before engraving designs.

Authentic period examples exhibit high density and weight due to lead content, sharp cut facets rather than moulded seams, ground-glass stoppers individually fitted to the neck, and natural wear marks on the underside of the base.

Flacons can be styled on a marble dressing table tray, a bedside table, or within a glass display cabinet where ambient light catches the faceted surface and coloured glass highlights.

Wash by hand using lukewarm water and neutral liquid soap, avoiding abrasive pads or sudden temperature shifts that cause thermal shock. Ensure the interior dries completely before reinserting the glass stopper.
