Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE GEORGIAN ERA:
Hand-cut dovetails on the corners: joinery prior to machine dovetailing.
Hand-wrought iron strap hinges: blacksmith work of the era.
Studded brass lettering on the lid: identification customary in the late Georgian period.
Medullary rays, the silvery flecks on the lid: quarter-sawn oak timber.
Soft wear along the plinth moulding: long handling and cleaning.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This Georgian oak blanket box trunk dates from circa 1830 and follows a traditional English country house style. The piece presents a dark brown polished finish with distinct grain patterns on its solid oak timber panels, alongside a chestnut bottom joined with well-cut dovetail construction. Notable details include the name W. Sharp spelled out in brass stud work on the top lid, wrought iron drop handles on the sides, an internal oak candle box that slides along runners over a hidden compartment, and a moulded plinth base at the foot. Measuring 57 cm high, 121 cm wide and 48 cm deep, the box has a finished back suitable for freestanding placement. Homeowners today use the piece at the foot of a bed for linens, in an entryway for storage, or positioned centrally in a living space to serve double duty as a coffee table.

FAQs

During the Georgian period, wooden blanket boxes and coffers served as essential household storage units for linens, textiles, and valuables, often placed in bedchambers or main living areas.

Georgian coffers were constructed from solid hardwoods such as oak, featuring hand-cut dovetail or mortise and tenon joints, forged iron hardware, and occasionally decorative brass studding.

Authentic Georgian chests exhibit signs of hand-planed timber, original wrought iron fittings, natural oxidation on the interior wood, and irregular hand-cut joining elements.

An oak coffer functions effectively as a coffee table in a living room, a bench seat at the foot of a bed, or a storage unit within an entrance hall.

Apply a high-quality beeswax polish periodically along the grain to protect the timber patination, avoiding placement near direct heat sources or damp environments.
