FAQs

A Georgian wrythen ale glass is a historic drinking vessel produced during the 18th century, characterised by its slender form and distinctive spiral moulded optical decoration on the bowl.

These glasses were traditionally hand-blown using lead glass or flint glass, often featuring moulded optical ribs that were twisted whilst hot to create the characteristic wrythen pattern.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit pontil marks on the underside of the foot, natural surface wear, inclusions or bubbles within the metal of the glass, and the heavier weight characteristic of period lead content.

Historic glassware can be displayed within illuminated glass-fronted cabinets, on open wooden shelving to catch the light, or used sparingly as functional tabletop accents in traditional and transitional settings.

Antique glass should always be hand-washed in lukewarm water using mild detergent, dried immediately with a lint-free cloth, and kept away from extreme temperature fluctuations and direct sunlight.
