Dealers Notes

Our stock includes early oak and walnut furniture from the 18th century, as well as more formal pieces from the Georgian period. Clocks, barometers and globes are complemented by Colonial cabinets, furniture and early arms. Their scientific instruments, which include early microscopes, telescopes and equipment such as sextants, provide a fascinating insight into the evolution of technology, whilst demonstrating fine artistry and craftsmanship. One of Hansord’s many exhibitions was entitled ‘From simplicity to complexity with a little eccentricity’ and this continues to be the guiding mantra behind their collection today.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A coffre fort is a reinforced strongbox or chest historically used across Europe during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries to store valuable items, coins, and important documents securely.

These chests were typically crafted from sturdy hardwood bases, layered with decorative kingwood or walnut oyster veneers cut transversely from branches, and reinforced with heavy brass or iron strapwork and locks.

Authentic period pieces exhibit hand-forged iron or cast brass mounts, hand-cut dovetail joints, period lock mechanisms, and genuine signs of age such as uneven oxidisation and natural timber movement.

A decorative strongbox works exceptionally well as a focal statement on a sideboard, console table, or within an executive study, pairing seamlessly with both traditional and dark academia aesthetic schemes.

Dust the surface regularly with a dry, soft microfibre cloth, apply a high-quality beeswax polish sparingly to the timber, and avoid harsh metal cleaners that could damage the original patina of the brass mounts.
