Popularised during the late 19th century, Victorian novelty scent bottles were designed in whimsical forms such as animals, fish, or everyday objects. These small containers held liquid perfume or smelling salts and were frequently executed in cut glass with precious metal mountings.

These bottles typically feature hand-cut or moulded lead crystal glass combined with sterling silver, silver plate, or gold caps. Mountings often included screw caps, hinged tops, or stoppers crafted using hand-engraving and repousse metalworking techniques.

Authentic pieces generally display genuine silver hallmarks or makers marks on the metal collar or cap, alongside wear consistent with age around the stopper and base. Hand-cut glass pattern variations and hand-tooled metalwork also distinguish original period examples from modern reproductions.

Position the piece on a mirrored tray atop a dressing table, or arrange it inside a glass-fronted display cabinet alongside other antique vanity accessories. Alternatively, display it on a shelf where natural light can illuminate the cut glass detailing.

Clean the exterior glass using a soft, lint-free cloth lightly dampened with warm water and mild liquid soap. Polish the silver components with a dedicated silver polishing cloth, avoiding abrasive cleaners that could damage hallmarks or surrounding glasswork.
