This pair of Edwardian candlesticks dates to c.1910 and embodies the English Country House style. Each piece comprises a rich dark brown oak shaft carved with an open barley twist, rising from a turned circular wooden base and topped with a decorative brass sconce. The combination of warm timber and polished metal creates a traditional aesthetic suited for period interiors. Measuring 36.8 cm high, 15.2 cm wide and 15.2 cm deep, these decorative items provide a practical and striking addition to a mantelpiece in a living room, dining room or study. They serve as functional candleholders or tabletop display pieces within a home setting.

Barley twist, or Solomonic column, design originated in classical architecture and became popular in English woodwork during the 17th-century Restoration period, experiencing a major revival during the late Victorian and Edwardian eras.

Craftsmen constructed open barley twist candlesticks by turning timber on a lathe and hand-carving the hollow central spiral, frequently adding brass nozzles at the top to securely hold candles and prevent scorch marks.

Authentic period examples often display slight hand-carving variations between a pair, weighted circular bases, brass nozzle inserts, and accumulated oxidisation or natural patina within the recessed twists.

Position wooden candle holders on a mantelpiece, dining sideboard, or console table alongside contemporary ceramics to create visual contrast between traditional wood turning and modern textures.

Clean the timber regularly with a soft dry cloth and apply natural beeswax polish annually, while avoiding harsh liquid cleaners on brass components to preserve historical surface finish.
