Uranium glass incorporates trace amounts of uranium dioxide into the glass mixture, typically ranging from two to twenty five percent. When exposed to ultraviolet light, this chemical composition causes the glass to emit a vibrant green fluorescence.

Victorian glassware was commonly produced using a combination of free-blowing, mould-blowing, and intricate hand-cutting techniques. Skilled artisans utilised wheel-cutting lathes to carve geometric patterns into the surface of the glass before polishing.

Authentic pieces can be identified by their distinctive yellow-green hue under natural light and their characteristic bright neon green glow when tested with a 395nm or 365nm UV torch. Additionally, antique items often exhibit minor surface wear, pontil marks on the base, and slight manufacturing imperfections.

Antique glassware can be displayed within a glass-fronted cabinet with internal LED lighting to highlight its fluorescent properties, or used as a striking tablescape feature during dinner parties. Pairing these vibrant pieces with neutral table linens allows the historic colour to stand out.

Vintage glass should be washed by hand using lukewarm water and a mild, non-abrasive detergent to prevent scratching or chemical damage. Avoid placing antique glassware in dishwashers or exposing them to sudden temperature extremes.
