Magnificent Antique Georgian Solid Silver Gilt Dish/salt Pair - Barnard 1814

18th century
Description

We are delighted to offer this spectacular and unusual pair of Georgian solid silver dishes made in London by Rebecca Emes & Edward Barnard I 1814.

In spite of their compact and modest size, that is where their simplicity ends for nothing else about this pair is ordinary. The dishes have a silver gilt surface (gold on top of solid silver) which has a most ornate lemon gilded lustre which highlights any interior setting or display immediately.

What cannot be conveyed through photos is the gauge and quality of the pair. The craftsmanship and quality are on par with some of the finest silver dinner plates and have an incredibly reassuring and satisfying feel in hand. Additionally, the border is embellished with shell and gadroon decoration with anthemion accenting.

The design and quality are very much like those of Paul Storr's dishes/wares and are ability delightful, particularly to have in such a small form factor - a true testament to a 'no cost cut' craftsmanship and exemplary of how intricate Georgian silverware can be despite what could have otherwise been a plain and utilitarian object.

The dishes are raised and have a stepped design and border making it ideal for holding small treats or perhaps even to use as the most opulent ash tray. Confectionary, nuts, cheese, or condiments may be one of many ways you can indulge in using such fine antique silverware in the modern-day.

Full English hallmarks are present on the reverse side of each dish.

Why not get creative and find alternate uses; sorbets and ice creams would also likely grace the pair with an equally fine pair of silver spoons.

Size

Size (cm) W:12cm

Size (inches) W:4.72

Weight: 283 grams (9.09 Troy oz) the pair.

Condition

Great Condition - The pair is in great antique condition, with no major damage or issues. Some very minor surface scratches commensurate with age and one tiny ding on the base. The decoration and stippling remain very crisp and are an excellent example.

We aim to overemphasize and state these issues (if any) to avoid disappointment and thus please rest assured they are not significant nor affect the usage of the items.

Please refer to the photographs to examine the condition in further detail.
