Description

This dazzling little piece is exactly what we want to see in a Georgian (c.1714-1837) paste brooch - fantastic condition, black dot pastes* in a variety of complementary cuts and sizes, well matched in colour and incredibly sparkly, all set into silver with a rosy gold behind.

*The Georgians would paint a black dot on the bottom end of paste stones (the culet) to help give an illusion of depth and make them look more like real diamonds as they glittered in the candlelight.

The brooch is in excellent antique condition.

Georgian paste jewellery consists of hand-cut lead glass designed to imitate diamonds and gemstones, popular in the 18th and early 19th centuries due to its high refractive index and artisanal craftsmanship.

These pieces are typically crafted from low-grade silver, often backed with gold or foil to enhance reflectivity, featuring hand-set lead glass stones secured in closed-back settings.

Authentic pieces often feature closed-back metal settings, hand-cut facets with slight irregularities, foil linings beneath the stones, and the characteristic black dot inclusion found in specific antique paste types.

Antique brooches can be pinned to the lapel of a tailored blazer, fastened at the neckline of a blouse, or used to anchor a silk scarf for a touch of historical texture.

Store paste jewellery in a dry environment away from moisture, as water can seep behind the closed-back settings and ruin the foil linings. Clean only with a dry microfibre cloth and avoid liquid jewellery dips.
