Victorian vaseline glass, produced predominantly during the 19th century, is characterised by its distinctive yellow-green hue derived from the addition of uranium oxide, which causes the glass to fluoresce brightly under ultraviolet light.

These items were crafted from lead-free or lead glass batch mixtures infused with trace amounts of uranium dioxide, then typically mouth-blown into moulds or free-blown and hand-finished with applied stems and feet.

Authenticity is primarily verified by testing the glass with a 395nm UV blacklight, which should produce a characteristic vibrant lime-green glow, alongside examining the piece for period-appropriate manufacturing traits such as pontil marks, wear to the base, and minor bubbles or inclusions within the metal.

Antique glassware can be displayed within glass-fronted cabinets illuminated with discrete lighting to highlight its fluorescent properties, or incorporated into tablescapes for special dining occasions to introduce historic texture and colour.

Antique glass should be washed strictly by hand using lukewarm water and a mild, non-abrasive detergent, avoiding dishwashers, extreme temperature shifts, and prolonged exposure to direct sunlight to preserve the integrity of the material.
