The roemer is a traditional Germanic drinking vessel that evolved from Renaissance-era forest glass, characterised by a large bowl resting on a cylindrical, often prunted stem and a conical foot.

These glasses were traditionally mouth-blown using potash or forest glass, often incorporating coloured glass pastes, applied glass threads, and distinctive raspberry prunts fused onto the stem.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit pontil marks on the base, minor irregularities from hand-blowing, natural wear consistent with age, and specific colourations like amber, green, or ruby characteristic of the period.

Displaying such items within glass-fronted cabinets, on open shelving with adequate lighting, or as a focal point on a sideboard highlights their colour and historic craftsmanship.

Antique glass should be washed by hand using warm water and mild detergent, avoiding harsh scrubbing or ultrasonic cleaners to protect the fragile surface and any delicate applied rims.
