Dealers Notes

When buying it is important appreciate antiques have long histories of daily use and as such, over time they gain minor scratches, marks, knocks, shrinkage splits, signs of old woodworm, lifts and losses to veneer, which combine with care and years of polishing to create an individual character and patina. We describe the main flaws and those that fall outside of this bracket but cannot describe each marks separately and therefore suggest you do take the time to request extra photos. We do offer a 14 day money back guarantee if you are unhappy with your purchase but cannot refund the return shipping cost. If you are not sure please do not buy without clarifying or take the view that the only way to have it as near to new as possible is to have it fully and comprehensively restored.

FAQs

Authenticity is determined by examining construction methods, such as hand-cut dovetails, timber shrinkage patterns, natural oxidisation of the wood, and the presence of period-correct fixings and secondary woods like pine or mahogany.

An antique bookcase can be styled within a contemporary space by contrasting its warm wood tones with minimalist decor, neutral walls, and curated collections of books and objects to balance historical weight with modern simplicity.

Maintenance involves keeping the timber away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent veneer cracking, periodically applying microcrystalline wax for protection, and dusting gently with a dry, soft cloth.

These pieces were constructed using solid timber frames with decorative veneers such as burr walnut applied to visible surfaces. Joinery typically utilised traditional dovetailing and mortise-and-tenon techniques, paired with hand-carved detailing.

Victorian furniture encompasses designs produced during the reign of Queen Victoria, characteristically featuring heavy proportions, rich timber selections like burr walnut, and often incorporating revivalist motifs reflecting historical architectural periods.
